With a Masters in Architecture, Tim Szal can help you with your architectural design needs, from the design of a porch or pergola, to the development of a more complex addition or new construction. Szal Design will work with architects, engineers, and contractors to make sure your project is done right and executed to your specifications. Tim has worked for Kallmann McKinnell & Wood Architects of Boston, MA, Schnee Architects of Newton, MA, Audrey O'Hagan Architects of Weston, MA, and Knight Associates Architects of Blue Hill, ME.
Szal Design has experience measuring homes, drafting and modeling existing conditions, and developing project concepts for construction, such as this proposed second floor plan for a classic victorian home.
Szal Design was tasked with designing and building a pergola for a local residence. The pergola was designed to connect the home and garage along an existing brick wall, and act as a support structure for the growing rose bushes on the street side. With the existing elements at different angles to one another, the pergola uses its segmented nature to "morph" between the different angles, creating a structure that is purposeful and enhances its surroundings. This was a design-build project.
An exploded axonometric view of the initial pergola concept.
Since each piece of the pergola was at a different angle, careful measurements were needed for every piece for the pergola to be built without any "oops" moments. This meant that there were no unknown factors going into the build phase, and that the pergola could be built to a tolerance of about one sixteenth of an inch.
